Best Practices for Nest Box Design
These guidelines reflect what works best for Eastern Bluebirds in Wisconsin’s climate and habitat conditions. Following these practices helps ensure safe nesting, easier monitoring, and long‑term success for bluebird families.
Proper Mounting & Placement
Where and how a nest box is mounted has a major impact on bluebird success. Proper placement reduces predation, minimizes competition, and increases the chances that bluebirds will choose and successfully use the box.

Mount nest boxes on metal poles. Metal poles reduce climbing predators and last
longer than wooden posts.

Install a predator guard on every pole.
A stovepipe or Noel guard is essential
for protecting eggs and nestlings.

Place boxes in open habitat. Bluebirds prefer short grass, scattered trees, and open areas rather than dense woods.

Keep boxes away from brushy cover. Avoid placing boxes near shrubs or fences where predators can hide.

Management Strategies
